Some of my favourite English writing resources for homeschool, including links to some of the best loved classic novels that are now free in the public domain. I have also included some printables that I created that are free to download and use.
- Learn English Kids by the British Council
- Free Grammar Worksheets (for Grades 1-5)
- I found the Scholastic’s Teacher Store helpful in picking out grade appropriate books for my son read from K-6, and then The Scholastic Parent page for grades 7-9. You can purchase most of these books online or at local bookstores.
- Many classic books and novels are now available for free and can be found at: A Free Library of Classic Books (read via web browser) or Project Gutenberg (can be viewed in browser or may be downloaded in various formats such as EPUB, MOBI, Text).
- B.C.’s School District 72 offers a Paragraph Writing Checklist PDF that is a handy printout to help kids evaluate whether or not they’ve written a strong paragraph.
- This Descriptive Words website has an excellent variety of descriptive words grouped by subject such as movement, touch, smell, and taste. It’s a great way for kids to expand their vocabulary and descriptive writing skills.
- Penguin UK’s 9 Different Types of Poetry for Kids has a good summary of each type and includes a short poetry glossary.
FREE PRINTABLES TO DOWNLOAD
In addition to the English writing resources for homeschool, here are a couple of my custom printables. Over the years I created a few anchor charts to give my son a quick visual reference for several key concepts and elements of creative writing. They are all free to download and use.
